A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is a trained veterinary professional that assists the veterinarian in caring for your pet. RVT’s perform many of the same tasks that a nurse would for a doctor. They have graduated from a college accredited by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians and passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination. In addition, they must regularly attend ongoing continuing education seminars and conferences to maintain their RVT status.
RVT’s collect patient blood and urine samples, perform lab tests, assist during patient exams and dental cleanings, and take x-rays. They assist in anaesthetizing your pet and monitor them under anaesthetic. They are responsible for the monitoring and treatments of hospitalized patients, and communicate any changes or concerns to the veterinarian.
