  • Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, is found in fresh and brackish water of ponds and lakes. This microscopic bacteria can also grow in backyard fountains, garden pots, bird baths, and anywhere water is stagnant.

  • An allergy is a state of over-reactivity or hypersensitivity of the immune system to a particular substance called an allergen. Most allergens are proteins from plants, insects, animals, or foods. In the dog, the most common symptom associated with allergies is itching of the skin, either localized (in one area) or generalized (all over the body). The symptoms of allergies can be confused with other disorders, or occur concurrently with them. Therefore, do not attempt to diagnose your dog without veterinary professional assistance.

  • Allopurinol (brand names Lopurin┬«, Zyloprim┬«) is a drug used to prevent the recurrence of uric acid and calcium oxalate uroliths (stones) in dogs. This medication works by decreasing the production of uric acid in the body. It is also used in the treatment of leishmaniasis in dogs and cats and is usually combined with other drugs. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

  • Alprazolam may be used to prevent unwanted behaviors in dogs and cats. This includes anxious, aggressive dogs or those demonstrating panic reactions.

  • Aluminum hydroxide is used to reduce hyperphosphatemia (elevated blood levels of phosphate) in patients with kidney failure. Aluminum salts work by reducing the amount of phosphorus absorbed from the intestine by physically binding to dietary phosphorus.

  • Amantadine is an antiviral agent. It also may be useful to treat chronic pain when administered in combination with other drugs.

  • Aminocaproic acid has been used to treat degenerative myelopathy (disturbances in the spinal cord) primarily in German Shepherds. This medication helps stop the process that damages nerves.

  • Aminocaproic acid is an anti-fibrinolytic agent (an agent that prevents the breakdown of fibrin, a protein needed for proper blood clotting). R.M. Clemmons, Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Florida Veterinary College advocates its use in the treatment of degenerative myelopathy (DM), a condition in which nerve tissue breaks down, in German Shepherds.

  • Aminophyllin is used to relieve cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and troubled breathing. The medication works by relaxing the air passages of the lungs, thus increasing the amount of air flowing into the lungs.

  • Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant. Amitriptyline has been prescribed to treat separation anxiety in your dog or to treat excessive grooming, urine spraying or anxiety in cats. In birds, amitriptyline may be used for behavior problems such as feather picking. This medication may also be used to prevent itching in dogs, to treat neuropathic pain or to decrease the signs of urinary tract inflammation in cats.
