It is perfectly normal to be nervous about your pet undergoing an anaesthetic procedure. Although a small amount of risk is present with every anaesthesia, just as it is in people, we do everything we can to minimize the risk. If we felt that the risk of anaesthetic in your particular pet outweighed the possible benefits, we would not recommend the procedure.
We always perform preanesthetic testing before surgery to determine whether or not there are any special considerations for your pet undergoing an anaesthetic. The choice of which drugs and anaesthetics to use are tailor made to your pet’s unique circumstances. If certain health problems are present, we can alter the anaesthetic protocol we use to make your pet’s procedure as safe as possible. During the procedure, a veterinary technician will continually assess your pet’s heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels and other vital signs. Pain medication will be given to your pet both before, during and after the procedure if there is the likelihood that your pet might be painful from the procedure being performed.
